SAPPHIRES

Sapphires are a variety of the mineral corundum. All colourless and coloured varieties are known as sapphires, with the exception of red stones, which are called rubies. Today the term ‘sapphire’ is used to denote blue varieties of the mineral, with colours ranging from sky blue to a very dark, almost black midnight blue. The colour of a stone may vary, depending on how the light strikes it.
